D\u00e8s le XVIe si\u00e8cle, l&#8217;historien Guy Coquille la d\u00e9crivait comme \u00ab une petite montagne en rochier \u00bb, sur laquelle s&#8217;\u00e9levaient le ch\u00e2teau et une partie de la ville. Contre toute attente, la barque aurait remont\u00e9 le courant jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 Decize, o\u00f9 le saint fut inhum\u00e9. Plus jeune \u00e9lu de la Convention nationale, proche alli\u00e9 de Robespierre, il devient l&#8217;une des figures les plus marquantes \u2014 et les plus redout\u00e9es \u2014 de la Terreur, au point d&#8217;\u00eatre surnomm\u00e9 \u00ab l&#8217;Archange de la Terreur \u00bb.
